Hayley Galgut

Hayley is an attorney with 25+ years’ experience and an International Mediation Institute (IMI) qualified civil and commercial mediator accredited with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR)(UK), Conflict Dynamics(SA) and DiSAC(SA).

Hayley has worked across several African countries, the Middle East and the United Kingdom, practiced law at two of South Africa’s largest commercial law firms and has a strong track record in advising individuals, businesses of all sizes, government departments and civil society-based organisations across a wide range of sectors.

Hayley has successfully litigated numerous, high profile, precedent-setting, discrimination-related cases in South Africa’s High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court and has a wealth of experience providing independent liability assessments and dispute resolution services, including resolving complex and sensitive matters through confidential mediations and negotiated settlements.

Hayley is further highly skilled at drafting and reviewing policies, and chairing investigations and disciplinaries. She has lectured at several universities in South Africa and abroad, worked in transitional and transformative justice contexts, facilitated multi-stakeholder processes and engagements across socio-political, cultural and religious divides, led workplace and community-based dialogues and been involved in multi-party law reform initiatives. In addition to running her own legal services and mediation consultancy, Galgut Legal, Hayley is a Conflict Dynamics as well as a Tokiso Dispute Settlement panellist; provides pro bono mediation services for court-referred family and harassment-related matters in two Cape Town-based Magistrate’s Courts and is engaged with the South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW)’s mediation project at the Western Cape Labour Court.
